Yisrâʼêl — Israel = “God prevails”

Genesis 32:29 — “Said he, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with beings divine and human, and have prevailed.””

Genesis 32:33 — “That is why the children of Israel to this day do not eat the thigh muscle that is on the socket of the hip, since Jacob’s hip socket was wrenched at the thigh muscle.”

Genesis 33:20 — “He set up an altar there, and called it El-elohe-yisrael.”

Genesis 34:7 — “Meanwhile Jacob’s sons, having heard the news, came in from the field. They were distressed and very angry, because he had committed an outrage in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter—a thing not to be done.”

Genesis 35:10 — “Saying to him, “You whose name is Jacob, You shall be called Jacob no more, But Israel shall be your name.” Thus he was named Israel.”
